USM Women's Forum Solidarity Statement - Asian & Asian American Community

The University System of Maryland Women's Forum (USMWF) stands in solidarity with the Asian and Asian American community and condemns race and gender-based acts of violence.  We are empathic for the loss of life of our brothers and sisters in the Asian and Asian American community on March 16, 2021.  The racial profiling that the Asian and Asian American community has been subject to has resulted in varying forms of discrimination, bias, stereotyping and violence throughout the history of the United States.  USMWF acknowledges that a long-standing history of xenophobia persists and perpetuates injustice, inequities, prejudice, and violence against people of marginalized identities.

The USMWF is committed to transforming ourselves and our community to prevent tragedies like this in the future.  We value diverse peoples and practices, and we strive to create an inclusive environment and a more equitable world through education, engagement, empowerment, and advocacy.

USM WOMEN'S FORUM's Response to the U.S. Capitol riot

The University System of Maryland Women’s Forum condemns the January 6th attacks on the U.S. Capitol and the acts of terror that thwart the democratic principles of the United States.  Our democratic ideals value the diversity of people and their thoughts to make room for peaceful and civil discourse of differences.  The riots and violence demonstrated ignorance on the part of the violators fueled by insightful misinformation and the lack of respect and understanding regarding our democracy.  The response to the violence or the lack thereof, highlights the persistent structural inequities of race that plague our society.

The University System of Maryland Women's Forum acknowledges the inequities and injustices in the United States and rises to the challenge to advocate for equitable treatment, opportunity, and access to resources for all people.  We commit to empower each other through teaching and learning of our differences so as to develop a diverse community of thought leaders that can engage in civil exchange to challenge normative ideals, identify innovative solutions, and contribute to the common good of society.
